Eczema Support in Fleet
Eczema Care & Support
When skin is healthy, the outermost layer, also known as the skin barrier, has a structure similar to that of a brick wall. Specialised cells (corneocytes) and lipids (fats) form layers that fit tightly together, creating a protective shield that keeps hydration locked in and unwanted pathogens, pollution, and irritants out. In skin with eczema, specialised lipids are naturally deficient, creating gaps. This means that skin becomes vulnerable to excess water loss (Transepidermal water loss) and external irritants, triggering the skin’s immune response and
eczema symptoms.
What is Eczema (Atopic)?
Eczema is a long-term skin condition which typically flares and then relapses. Symptoms include dry, red or brownish (depending on skin tone), itchy and uncomfortable skin. Further symptoms can include scaly skin, small bumps, and skin cracking.
Skin Barrier Compromise & Eczema
When skin is healthy, the outermost layer, also known as the skin barrier, has a structure similar to a brick wall. Specialised cells (corneocytes) and lipids (fats) form layers that fit tightly together, creating a protective shield that keeps hydration locked in and unwanted pathogens, pollution, and irritants out. In skin with eczema, the specialised lipids are naturally deficient, creating gaps. Skin becomes vulnerable to excess water loss (Transepidermal water loss) and external irritants, triggering the skin’s immune response and eczema symptoms.
Additionally, for some people with eczema (around 50%), a genetic mutation is another factor. This mutation reduces the amount of a protein called filaggrin, which is crucial for the formation of the skin’s barrier and the production of Natural moisturising factor. Natural moisturising factor helps the skin hold water and prevent dryness, so its deficiency further compromises eczema-prone skin.
Who Is Most Likely To Be Affected?
Around 20% of the population is affected by eczema, which can be inherited and is also associated with asthma, hay fever and food allergies. In 90% of cases, the onset is between 3 months and 5 years. For around 25% of those affected, Eczema continues into adulthood. Males and females are affected equally.
Why Does Eczema Flare?
Both genetic and environmental factors can be responsible. Eczema skin can be easily affected by seasonal changes.
Here are a few examples of factors that can trigger an eczema flare :
How Can I Help?
My approach to treating Eczema
I cannot cure your eczema, but I can help support your skin’s health. Since eczema skin has a naturally weakened barrier, my corneotherapeutic approach is well-suited to repairing and strengthening it, which can help reduce symptoms and reduce recurrence.
I can recommend appropriate Dermaviduals skincare for adults, children and babies with eczema. For children’s and babies’ skin, please fill out my contact form. I’m happy to arrange a call to see if Dermaviduals may be helpful.
What is Corneotherapy
Corneotherapy is a skincare philosophy which focuses on the repair, restoration and maintenance of the skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum. With eczema skin, it’s about ensuring the skin’s barrier is as resilient as possible, which in turn reduces the skin’s immune response and, consequently, eczema symptoms.
Dermaviduals functional skincare
Highly compatible with eczema skin types, Dermaviduals skincare contains Derma membrane structure, DMS, a unique formulation of ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol to support and strengthen the skin’s barrier. Only available through skin specialists, ensuring that you get exactly the right products and supporting advice for your skin.
Your in-depth Consultation & My Approach
If you are struggling with your eczema symptoms, frequent flare-ups, or the overall condition of your skin every day, and want a new approach that better supports your specific skin challenges, my approach can help.
It all starts with me gaining a deeper understanding of your skin, its history and triggers is where we will start. I will examine your skin and provide a gentle treatment only where appropriate. I will initially recommend a very simple skincare routine for you to continue at home.
Which treatments help with Eczema?
In my extensive experience Dermaviduals’ skin health treatments are suitable & effective for eczema-prone skin and usually leave skin calmer and more comfortable. Dermalux LED can also be helpful for eczema-prone skin; NR-infrared wavelengths, in particular, can support healing and reduce inflammation and itching. When eczema is well managed, treatments such as microcurrent enhance skin barrier health, making them a beneficial option. My treatments are always personalised, and I advise clients individually on the suitability of any treatment.
This process often leads to calmer, less reactive and more comfortable skin starts with your skin consultation and then getting your skin onto the right skincare, Dermaviduals. Each eczema skin is unique, so will be your journey to a healthier, better-supported skin.
