Hi, I’m Jo — skin therapist and Corneotherapist based in Fleet. A question I get asked often is:

“Can I get plumper, smoother skin without fillers or injectables?”

The answer may be yes, considering two main factors. Firstly, your mindset: do you want an instant solution, or are you interested in longer-term skin gains? Are you the type of person who appreciates that results take time? Secondly, your expectations, do you find the idea of seeing any signs of ageing in your skin deeply concerning, or do you accept that you will age, but want to age well?

Another important factor is your age, or how old your skin appears. As we all age at different rates, influenced by factors like genetics, lifestyle, and health, your skin may appear younger or older than your chronological age. The relevance here is what we are trying to achieve. Younger skin, such as that of someone in their early 30s or younger, is highly likely to achieve excellent skin rejuvenation results from Microneedling treatments and/or other advanced skin treatments. However, this doesn’t mean that remarkable results aren’t achievable on older skin; instead, more treatments over a longer period may be required. The key is to thoroughly discuss, through a consultation process, what you’d like to achieve and how you want to age before proceeding with any course of skin rejuvenation treatments.

If you are considering the different options available not only for plumping your skin but also for helping it age well over time, this blog is for you. We will be unpacking Fusion Meso Microneedling and Nanoneedling, and how they compare to fillers.

Fillers vs Microneedling/Nanoneedling: What’s the difference?

Important to consider

Today, there is a vast array of injectable fillers available, designed to restore volume, reshape or stimulate collagen. When choosing filler, there are many considerations: your suitability, the type, reversibility, awareness of risks and complications, and the qualifications, safety, and injector skill of the professional carrying out the procedure.

What other considerations are important

With filler, sometimes the results are instant, making it easy to overlook what happens in the longer term. Most Fillers are not permanent, and the ageing process continues. Over time, not only does the skin’s capacity to rejuvenate decline, but muscle tissue and bone structure age too. One vital question is whether your filler treatments can sustainably give you the results you want. For some, the answer may be yes, but this is impossible to predict with accuracy.

How can I age well?

Promoting better skin health is another approach that can help rejuvenate your skin comprehensively and sustainably, while recognising that ageing is a natural process and maintaining a youthful appearance indefinitely is nearly impossible. You could liken this approach to that of getting fit through exercise; it doesn’t happen overnight. In the same way, advanced skin treatments offer gradual skin rejuvenation, build over time and put your skin in an optimal condition, where it will age more slowly! Remember, ageing is gradual, so it’s reasonable that reversing the visible signs of ageing may take time and indeed have its limitations.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a technique involving superficial micro-injections using solutions rich in active ingredients. Well known in the field of aesthetic medicine, mesotherapy stimulates cellular processes, including fibroblast activity. Fibroblast cells comprise the main protein of the extracellular matrix; their activity is closely linked to young and healthy skin due to their role in the skin’s elasticity, suppleness and firmness.

Microneedling

Microneedling is an advanced, non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that creates tiny microchannels in the skin’s surface. The micro channels trigger the body’s natural wound healing processes, leading to the production of new collagen and elastin fibres. My clients see improvements in skin quality, density, texture and tone.

What’s In the Fusion Meso Cocktails?

Fusion Meso sterile vials are formulated to deliver precise amounts of pharmaceutical-grade active ingredients, which in turn stimulate rejuvenation and repair within the skin. Ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, peptides, Hyaluronic acid, growth factors and Exosomes are combined to work synergistically to enhance the skin’s appearance. With thirty-nine Meso vials available in the Fusion Meso portfolio, all with studioal efficacy, my clients can be confident there is the right cocktail for their skin’s needs.

When compared to fillers, Fusion Meso Microneedling

  • Treats a variety of skin concerns
  • Improves skin health and glow
  • Results accumulate over many months, and skin continues to show improvements for 6-18 months post-treatments.
  • Improves skin density
  • Improves skin texture
  • Treatment for the whole face & neck compared with localised fillers
  • Results are natural
  • Non-invasive
  • Working with the skin, stimulating and boosting your skin’s own collagen, elastin, hydration and firmness from the inside out.
  • When carried out professionally, there is no risk of an unwanted aesthetic outcome, either in the short or long term

Loss of Facial volume

Facial muscles are relevant here, along with fat pads found in the face. Different face shapes, genetic disposition, ageing, and weight change affect how fat loss occurs in the face. Aside from weight change, these factors cannot be altered. The good news is that it’s possible to support the tone of your facial muscles, which will ensure good support for your overlying skin tissue. My preferred way to do this is through the use of Dynamic Microcurrent. You can read more about this here.

What’s the Difference Between Microneedling and Nanoneedling?

Meso-Microneedling

Uses a sterile cartridge containing nine ultra-fine surgical-grade needles to create precise depth micro-channels, which allow targeted absorption of active ingredients. New collagen and elastin production is stimulated.

Ideal for

Fine lines and wrinkles, texture, skin laxity, pigmentation, scarring, skin health, and glow over time and to slow down skin ageing.

Nanoneedling

This product uses a specialised cartridge containing 120 nano cones designed for very shallow and comfortable skin penetration of active ingredients. There is generally no redness or downtime.

This is ideal as an introduction for nervous clients or for reactive skin types, where appropriate.

Highly effective in hydrating and plumping skin.

Ideal for

Where a gentle treatment is more suitable or desirable. For Hydration, glow and ‘Red carpet treatment’ option.

Maintenance treatment for skin health.

What You Can Expect Immediately After

Nanoneedling

  • Immediate glow and plumping
  • Smoother texture
  • Hydrated, more even skin tone
  • No downtime — just fresh skin
  • Results are built with a course of treatments

Microneedling

  • Some redness and swelling (inflammation) is normal
  • Skin can feel hot and tight for a few hours up to approximately 48 hours
  • Bruising is possible but rare
  • Minimal downtime, depending on the individual microneedling protocol used
  • For a first Microneedling, I would generally advise a 24-48 hour downtime window, although many clients do not feel they need to stay at home.
  • Skin generally recovers within 5 days.
  • Some skin peeling may occur after 4-5 days.
  • The full skin rejuvenating effects of microneedling become visible in the months following a course of treatments, especially after three treatments, although some clients report skin improvements before this.

* In my studioal experience, using Exosomes reduces redness and inflammation due to their healing and calming effects on the skin. For those who want minimal downtime or have reactive skin, I recommend using Exosomes.

Your skin remains mobile, expressive and natural-looking. You look like a fresher, well-rested version of yourself.
