What is LED Phototherapy?
Phototherapy meaning ‘treatment with light’ is the application of low-level light energy to stimulate or regulate biological processes. LED light therapy employs colours and frequencies of light that interact with our skin on a cellular level. The light energy works in a similar way to photosynthesis which provides energy for a plant to grow, but with LED light applied to the skin, it energises the mitochondria (the cell's powerhouse or battery) within the skin cells producing cellular energy which is used for repair and regeneration.
Different wavelengths have different effects
- BLUE light (415nm) is proven to have powerful antibacterial properties, mainly used for acne treatment. Dermalux is effective for all grades of Acne.
- RED light (633nm) accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis, thus excellent for ageing skin.
- NEAR-INFRARED light (830nm) accelerates healing, helps skin tissue regeneration and inflammatory issues, making it effective for treating scars, and rosacea, reducing pigmentation, post Microneedling and for pain relief.
Inside out approach
Phototherapy works inside the skin, and the cellular changes can begin immediately because of the direct Phototherapy application, as compared to the inside-out effect of, say, nutrition which whilst important, will take longer to see the benefits on the skin surface.

Clients having advanced treatments such as Radiofrequency or Microneedling will automatically receive a Compact Lite treatment to accelerate skin healing processes and enhance Collagen & Elastin production.
Contraindications
Epilepsy, Porphyria (prickly heat/light sensitive skin), Lupus Erythematosus, Photosensitive Eczema, Hypomelanism (Albinism), Skin cancer, Cancer, Eye disease and pregnancy and light-induced headaches.
Home devices
Home devices may be beneficial providing the wavelengths are exactly correct. Some devices do not provide the correct wavelengths and will not supply the same level of energy and therefore results can be extremely variable. Whilst I can’t make a recommendation from experience, I would say that you must ensure any device is CE-marked and if it is a mask, it’s essential to keep it clean from sweat and bacteria especially when treating acne.
Dermalux flex rental
I’ve now introduced Dermalux Flex rental for my clients, to enable my clients to support their skin at home when it’s either not practical or economical to come in for salon treatments. Used in conjunction with the correct skin care Dermalux Flex is an option which can help my clients speed up their reults or give their skin an extra boost pre or post-treatment.
